Sonic Dash for the iPhone

Sonic Dash Logo

Sonic The Hedgehog finally gets into the iPhone! And no, I'm not talking about an imported Genesis game that you can play on the iPhone. I'm talking an original Sonic game for the iPhone. Sonic Dash for the iOS is something you should be looking forward to playing. This game is very unique and even though it's gameplay style is similar to Temple Run, this is not a complete rip-off.

In this game, you can play as Sonic and friends as you endlessly run through levels with super speed! The only character you can choose is Sonic, but you can get the other characters by purchasing them through Red Star Rings.

As far the gameplay goes, it's a little different from Temple Run. Of course, Sonic can switch lanes, and jump to avoid obstacles, but he can also Spin Dash. If you slide your finger down, Sonic can roll into a ball, and knock enemies out of the way. Slide your finger three times, and he can do a Spin Dash boost which lets you stay as a ball for a longer time. Sonic can also do the Sonic Boost. When the gauge is full and turns yellow, you can press the boost button below it. This will make Sonic go super fast and become invincible to any obstacle that comes in his way. Sonic's natural skill in this game also comes with a Homing Attack. This is only accessible when there is a fish jumping out of the water. That way, he can attack the fish and get to the other side.

Next up, are the springs. These will take you to different parts of a level or to an actual different level. If you take a spring with the ring box, it will store your rings in a bank. This is good feature to the game, because you can store more rings and add those to your ring storage to purchase things. Another spring with a green hill zone loop on it will take you to another part of the level, but this time Sonic goes a loop in a spin dash form. The camera zooms out to make the scene cinematic, and it looks great. The springs with the "?" mark takes you to random places, and the springs with a puzzle sign leads you to one of the puzzle pieces to collect.

The levels that are only in this game are Green Hill Zone and Seaside Hill. It sucks to only play those two levels, but hopefully they can make more when the next updates are coming. Also, the music you hear is the remix of Seaside Hill from Sonic Heroes. It's awesome to hear but it gets old when you keep hearing the same thing over and over again. In the next updates, Sega hopefully can change the music depending on the level you're on. But what I really think that needs to be changed are the other characters besides Sonic. All the characters within game copy the SAME thing Sonic does. It's basically like Sonic in Shadow's, Tail's, Knuckles', and Amy's costume.

I didn't feel like paying for the Red Star Rings to get the other characters, so I looked up gameplay footage of them. When I saw all of them, I was disappointed. I was really hoping that the characters would change the way you interact with obstacle and enemies in the game. None of the characters have any type of skill besides just being a substitute for our trusty blue hedgehog. To me, it makes me think that Sega only used this game for commercial standards. It's like they never even thought of giving the other characters any type special power at all, they just copied Sonic's formula and just paste it to the others.

I was hoping that with the gauge, characters can only use their special abilities until the gauge runs out. Like Tails can fly in the air, but of course, this will decrease his gauge rapidly. Knuckles can temporarily break obstacles that are in the way with the exception of enemies. As for Amy and Shadow, that's still something to think about. If you want to give some ideas, just comment below. This game would have a lot of potential if they add these kind of things to the game.

But overall, the game is good. Sonic fits perfectly with endless runner games like this, and I think that if they add more usefulness to the other characters, with more level maps, and more remixed music, the game would be 10x better! But just for now, the game is good. Now usually I would rate games, but I'm just gonna let the review speak for itself. This is Daniel, and I'll see you guys in the next review.
